Review of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Hatchet is a story that centers around a young boy named Brian Robeson. The story starts with Brian getting on a small single engine plane that was going to take him up north. Brian was going to be visiting his father for the first time since his parent’s divorce.

During the flight the plane crashes into a lake that’s in the middle of the vast Canadian wilderness. Brian was the only survivor of the crash. In order to survive in the wild Brian must

become very creative with his hatchet, the one item that he was able keep form the crash.

Brian really shows a strong survival instinct throughout the book. Even with that instinct, he still struggles at times. It shows how hard it can be to survive in the wild and makes you appreciate your own life.

Hatchet is a fun and intense adventure story. I really enjoyed this book as a kid. It was one of the first books that really enticed me to become a book worm. I’ve read Hatchet many times throughout my life, and will probably read it many more. Hatchet will always hold a special place in my heart.

I recommend this book for anyone who likes survival stories or any of Gary Paulsen’s books. Hatchet rates four out of five stars.
